Hutcheon Mearns are partnering with an oil and gas explorer, developer and producer which operates in a variety of locations around the world. Listed on the London Stock Exchange, this business has a flexible and balanced exploration portfolio and is going through an exciting phase of development. This is a key role leading the Operational Finance function, ensuring all compliance and accountabilities for the function are established, communicated, and adhered to. It is an operationally focussed finance role which involves strong people management, business collaboration and business partnering skills.

Key Areas of Responsibility:

Leadership

  • Lead the Operational Finance function agreeing and prioritising its objectives, and agreeing its scope and activities, responsibilities, and resources (personnel, skills, and training). Responsible for implementing any agreed resourcing changes plans for Operational Finance.

Control and Compliance

  • Accountable for setting and meeting the Operational and Joint Venture Finance timetable for closing and reporting, and accountable for producing both internal and external financial plans, budgets, forecasts, AFEs and other reports in accordance with agreed internal and external policies, processes, procedures guidelines and agreements (JOAs, PSCs, etc).

Budgeting, Reporting and Analysis

  • Accountable for producing all relevant and compliant financial plans, budgets, forecasts, AFEs and other documentation to internal asset management, Governments, Joint Ventures Partners and other stakeholders, both external and internal, in line with relevant agreed timelines.

Systems and processing

  • Accountable and responsible for the review, establishment, implementation, documentation and improvement of relevant financial systems, processes, procedures, and controls for the Operational Finance function.

JV Audits

  • Accountable for relevant JV audit coordination with JV Accountants/ JV Assistant Accountants/ Senior Operational Accountant responsible for specific assets or activities - for audits of the company as Operator and non-Operator.

Representation

  • Accountable and responsible for attending meetings with governments and Joint Venture partners (Finance Committees, Technical Committees, Operating and Management Committees) and other stakeholders and accountable for the financial elements of presentations given to them.

Agreements

  • Accountable for the financial review and update of oil and gas agreements and other major contracts and other documents.

Business Travel

  • Anticipated to be a maximum of 10% of time.

Skills & Experience:

  • Qualified Accountant with operational finance experience in the E&P sector
  • Extensive Joint Venture financial experience in 1) ERP JV solutions - and how to solve accounting issues, 2) budgeting and forecasting, 3) understanding key elements and treatments of standard JOA and PSC agreements, 4) representing the company in meetings with Joint Venture partners and governments,
  • Experience in dealing with operational assets and liaising with operational managers
  • Experience in dealing with departmental budget/ cost centre holders
  • Experience of working in/ with varied business locations
  • Excellent planning and organising skills
  • Proven supervisory and people management and communications skills (both written and verbal)
  • Ability to work on own initiative assessing problems and issues and developing and implementing solutions
  • Ability to develop and maintain strong networks - internally (departmental functions and assets) and externally (JV partners, government)
  • Cultural awareness and sensitivity
  • Excellent Microsoft Office skills, especially in Excel
  • Strong ability to collaborate
  • To support multi-country locations, conversational competence in French or Spanish would be advantageous, but is not essential.
